how bout paying attention to him? They dig for the same reason they tear up stuff in the house...because they are BORED. He needs something stimulating to keep him occupied.
I don't know how much more I could! She sleeps on the bed, I play with her all the time when Im at home, and the only time I cant give her attention is when I am at work.
I have had a couple that liked to dig out of the fence, connect chicken wire at the bottom of the fence and lay it out about 18 inches or more into the yard, press firmly in the grass.(initially this is to keep it out of the lawn mower, later it just kinda becomes part of the sod) When they start digging they hit this wire, it hurts their claws and they stop digging. I don't know if this would work on random hole diggers.(might be worth a try) Pretty cheap and it works. Good Luck.
This worked with my Beagle. She tried constantly to get beyond the fence. Chicken wire shopped the digging out from under the fence but not the digging. Shade and a companion helped the digging. She lost weight keeping up with the young-un.
You need to watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Great show, I'd say he done an episode about your digging problem. The post by "ag-ford-4X4" is so very true. Michael
Pop has it right. They really hate running into a pile of c--p every time they dig. It doesn't take to many times of running into the bad stuff before they learn.
When we lived in town we had designated digging spot for our Aussie/Border collie. We were able to teach her where she was allowed to dig, which satisfied her but also taught her that the rest of the yard was off limits. It worked pretty well. Now that we've moved to some acrage with a gopher problem it seems anything is fair game!
Find a corner of the yard, build a box about 6'x6'. Frame it up with 1x12s, place it in the ground, dig out about 2 feet of the soil, fill with play sand...
Shade and a companion helped the digging. She lost weight keeping up with the young-un.
In my opinion, Berkad nailed it. I'm not a dog trainer nor am I an expert in any way but, I've always gotten best results from my dogs when they had a buddy.
I just got a buddy for my cat... I'll let you know how that works out...
If the dogs are big enough, tie a one gallon milk jug to their collar. It keeps them from getting in digging position, while still allowing them to lay down.
