2001 Ford F-250 PS 4x4 transmission goes into reverse, surges in 1st and nothing in 2nd or drive. Ran fine, went into a store, and didn't work when I came back out. Is there anything simple that I could try? I was 5 hours from home when all this happened so I have quite a lot of money wrapped up in the whole thing already. Was hoping for something easy and cheap.
Only thing cheap and easy about that would be go back into to store pickup a case of your favorite beer and drink your woes away
In all seriousness, sounds like you are do for tranny rebuild/repair, none of which is cheap. I rebuild my own and still spend around 1200 for all the parts and tools needed to do the job.
Take this opportunity to get yourself an aftermarket tranny. You won't regret it. Mine died at 127K and I wish I would have waited and gone aftermarket. The ford remans or even a rebuild will hold up, but you can never go wrong with aftermarket. Aftermarket trannies can't be overpowered or even destroyed, that's why some of them are referred to as "bulletproof". Check some of the FTE sponsors for more info.
Or if u get your stock unit rebuilt install some good bypass filtering and additional cooling equipment. I'm betting it will last a long time if u run close to stock power.
I would check out the solenoid pack and or the electrical. If everything was fine like you say, then you have next to nothing when you get back in, that doesn't sound like a major mechanical failure. A mechanincal problem would leave you with burnt fluid, noises, no movement at all, or incorrect shift characteristics.Or if you have the money buy an aftermarket. You will be buying one eventually.
Hi Guys, I'm asking for my brother...2001 F350 4x4 Crew SRW, 4R100 FORD Factory REBUILT transmission. The pan was dropped today to do service. Laying in the pan was a bolt. After removing the filter a hole was found for the bolt and also another bolt was half backed out. It is a factory rebuilt 4R100, it was installed in Montana, he lives in Spokane, WA. What should he do at this point? The truck is out of warranty but the transmission still has 2 1/2 years of 3 yr 36k mile warranty on it. He is about to do a trans continental divide trip & needs some advice now. Thankyou.

I think blown99 is on the right track. I have not heard of one breaking while in park with the engine off. If you know that it was running fine and had no known problems, unless you cooked it right before you shutdown, then I think you may find your fix without a new tranny. Good luck and let us know.

His truck may be out of warranty, but his tranny isn't. This is obviously a tranny issue, there is no debating that. The warranty you got with the Ford reman applies nationwide like the new truck warranty. Just take it to any dealership (a reputable one) and have them check it out. Don't let them tell you it's something other than the tranny. Some dealerships will try to tell you this that and the other also needs attention when it really doesn't. Since Ford messed up and could easily have destroyed your tranny with those loose bolts, you could probably get a free tranny flush out of it. Just state your case and be firm.
Well I took it to the tranny shop. They put it on the machine and say that it is losing hydraulic pressure. They want to charge me $650.00 just to take it out and tear it down to say what the problem is. Then I would still have to pay them for the work they do and the parts they replace after that. I am thinking of tearing it down myself. I ordered a 4r100 tranny rebuild manual off ebay. Is this a bad idea?

I did mine and the only thing different I would do again is do it in nice weather, one morning I was working with 2" of snow on the ground putting it back in. It isn't bad, definately good mechanical skills and ability to interperate a manual is a must. If you can do both of those, I thought it was kind of fun doing the actual tear down of the transmission.
Just trying to follow along here and get educated. Am I missing something?? If it's still under warranty, why sink money into it. Take it back to Ford like the other post suggested??
