The other night driving home the truck started to buck a bit. Like it was out of fuel. It lasted for about a minute or so.
From a previous post, it was suggested that I need a new cps. Since then it has run just fine. So I don't know if I should change it anyway or wait. Oh yeah, I am getting ready to take it on a 1500 mile trip next week. I sure don't want it to go out on the trip but I don't want to replace it right now if I don't have to. Any thoughts?
now would be a good time! go ahead and get a new one and put it in then take yours out and put it in the glove box as a spare! i am in the same boat as i have 216K and have been getting a buck out of my truck every now and then.
dont get the CPS from the dealer, they want like $150 for one. i got mine off ebay for $65 plus shipping

I haven't found any on ebay??? How are you searching for it?
just go to the car and truck parts section. type in "powerstroke 7.3" thats usually what i do and it usually returns about 300 items. id almost bet there is some on there right now.
I found a front cover on ebay that has the CPS still mounted in it. Looking at that picture, it would apear that the bolt is no more than an inch long and it only threads into the cover.
I think I am going to weld a nut onto the top of the bolt and try to wrench it out with the wrench on the nut. If all else fails, then it's the vise grips, unless the head wrings off of the bolt, then it's drill and tap time.

Try a 10 mm 6-point socket. Steel bolt, aluminum cover. It is only tight for a second and then it comes out with your fingers the rest of the way. Also spray some PB Blaster up in there if you have some. You shouldn't have to weld a nut on there. If you try the 6-point and it doesn't work then try vice grips. It really is an easy get.
Your right, that's how it should be, but this one is in there very tight. I think the dissimilar metals have caused it to seize or maybe a previous owner stripped it.
That's what I did, 6 point socket, then when I found out how tight it was I used PB blaster and waited about an hour and tried again. Then I got a longer ratchet. The head rounded without the socket slipping off of it.
I'm a big strong boy but I couldn't budge it. Of course I was trying not to over do it due to the small size of the bolt. I was afraid I would wring the head off of it, but it rounded off instead.
I will continue to apply PB Blaster to it and try vise grips. If all else fails, I will try welding a nut to it.
This kind of stuff is irritating. It should have taken me longer to get the wrench out of my box than to do the job. Very easy to get to, easy to unplug, small bolt, what more could you ask for. I guess I had it coming!
If you cant find one on E-Bay go to an international Dealer they are half the price of Ford.
Just make sure you get the right one they will need the motor number.
