1970 F-100, inoperable fuel gauge, replacing the dash voltage reg and have 2 issues.
1. If I install the voltage reg the only way the connections line up, it will be upside down from the way it was originally and does not line up with the mounting holes. Not a problem in making a new mount but will it matter?
2. The plastic overlay that contains the copper wiring connections is pretty well shot and I'm wondering if maybe it was the problem all along- is this part
still findable or available aftermarket?
#2 - are you talking about the plastic cover on the back of the dash instrument panel? There's a ground wire on the back of the cluster that needs to have good contact.
Have you checked the sending unit for operation? Get a voltmeter, disconnect the fuel wires and look at the ohms/resistance. I believe your truck should be 0 empty and 90 ohms full - but whatever it should be it is very, very likely the sending unit is bad and the gauge is only ever seeing 0 ohms.
Read a little more than 1/2 full when full, a little less than 1/2 full when empty. Several previous posts indicated that this was a symptom of bad Dash voltage reg., but in my case it may be due to bad dash wiring.
Try shorting the wires at the sender and see what happens to the gauge. Should give you some indication of the quality of the circuit between the gauges and the sender. Did the other gauges- temp and oil pressure- consistently read low as well? It's my understanding that if the IVR is bad, those will read incorrectly as well.
