I am seriously thinking about going from 4.10 gears to 4.56's in my 06 F250 4x4 KR V10. I do not know what would be a "normal" price to expect for this swap.
I got a guestimate from a local and well respected truck shop of +/-$1,200 per axle.
CAn anyone provide any insight on this estimate? BTW they would be using Dana gears.
yes, i also looked around myself, and it was between 1200-1500 for both axles. the actual parts are fairly cheap... really only run you about 400-600 dollars for the gears with the master install sets... its the labor that kills ya on this job !
i had a local shop (one man shop) do mine, he charged me 1700 for both axles. i was happy, i actually met the person working on my truck and he had a great reputation
Yes... make sure you go with somebody who has a good reputation. I followed word of mouth to the shop that did mine. Had it done quickly, neatly and backed his work with a one year warranty.
You guys were correct. I had misunderstood and it was $1,200 total. However I think I have decided to go with 4.88's and the new price is $1,500.00. The big difference is they actually looked at the truck.
Cool! However, you do realize that once you go to a gear that size, you'll need to stick with 35+ inch tires forever! If you ever drop down to anything below a 35" tire, you will get some nasty MPGs.
Did he tell you why he did not recommend 88's? I am interested in all points of view.
Yes I realize I will not be able to run 33's, but how many people really back down on tire size? I know I never have, it always seems that I could fit a little bit bigger tire in there, so I do it. But point taken.
I will check out the weaker gear issue. I had not heard that.
I guess when you live in Arizona you don't even think about having to change tires because of the season. Needless to say, I see your point but we don't change tires down here for the seasons.
