It may not actually be any louder in the first 2 gears, but by the time you hit 3rd, wind and tire noise is beginning to drown out the engine noise. But, if you're sure it's louder, it may be the transmission that is causing the noise.

Maybe the trans because i just had it rebuilt a couple of months ago,but i dont know if it did it before i had the tow 'tugger' shift kit put in it. It is the motor because when you come to a stop and it down shifts in to 2nd it gets louder, but its the same at idle too so how could it be the trans then? maybe grinding?? God hope NOT!!!!

Are you running under same load when going to 3rd, most the time I usually am about 30-35 when in 3rd and not much throttle.

I've have had a similar issue. The injector noise seems to be worse at mid throttle when accelerating. In my case, I found I have a long lead #8 injector that was used to "fix" the cackle problem. After I modified the fuel system, the LL injector was no longer needed and it caused more noise. I am replacing it tomorrow, hope it helps. I know Kwik had a similar problem, he replaced his injectors and I understand it's much quieter. Might just be your injectors getting worn. Have you done the pre-pump or any other fuel mods? If have a bunch of air going through the injectors, this might account for increased noise also. Just a thought.
