lifters

I just removed my intake manifold today to replace some gaskets. I posted earlier about hearing tapping in the engine and someone said it may be a lifter or something in the valve train. Is there something that I should look for in the lifters or on the rocker arm to see if I do have a problem with them. Plus when I install the head to manifold gaskets do I put the side of the gasket that has the small ridges around the openings toward the head or the manifold? Does anyone know the torque specs for the rocker arm bolts?
thanks for the help

Brad,

Since you have it apart inspect your lifters and push rods. Pull each lifter one at a time and looked for a dished out spot on the bottom. It should appear flat but actually is convex. Also take each push rod one at a time and role it on a flat surface. Look for any warping. Remember all conponents MUST go back in their original location. If anything is as I state above, it could account for valve train noise. Also, are the lifters Hydo? Maybe one will not hold pressure.
Good luck,
Lee

If you've got it all apart and are having problems, you might just want to install new lifters and pushrods. These parts are not very expensive and can be found at Summit and probably even local part stores. It's been a while and I don't have my torque specs in front of me, but I think the rocker bolts are torqued to +/- 40 ft/lbs. When reinstalling make sure that you don't overtorque any single bolt too early in the sequence. In other words, snug each one up then proceed to torque to specs. Otherwise you could damage your shafts.

I have solid lifters. I pulled all of the lifters and they checked out fine and the pushrods were fine also. I know that solid lifters tend to be a little bit noisy and require more attention than hydro lifters but when I hear the tapping it is only one tap not multiple taps. Do you think I should switch to hydrolic lifters and pushrods? Also how will the hydrolic lifters effect the adjustment of the rocker shaft? Would I only have to swap in the lifters and rods and torque the shaft to specs and be all set?
thanks for any help

Brad,

I am not sure here but, I think that to convert to Hydro lifters some oil galleries need to be un-plugged in the block. This so the hydro lifters get their required oil. Also I think that different rocker arms/push rods were used with hydro lifters.

OK, dum question I know but, have the valves been properly adjusted? You know, with the engine up to temp and all that stuff?
Good luck,
Lee

The valves were adjusted during the last tune up. I probably should try that again to be sure.
thanks
