Steering Column Broken?

I just installed power steering in my 1971 F100 last night and got everything installed fine except the column. It's a power steering column and everything bolts up. However, the only way to get the shifter to engage the bracket which the tranny linkage attaches to is to push down hard on the top of the column, twisting a little until it engages. It's almost like there needs to be something to pin in or bolt down once the shifter is engaged. As soon as I let off pressure, it springs back up and the shifter ring just spins around. I installed the steering wheel thinking this may need to be on to keep everything tight--it holds a little better but I can still grab the shifting collar and spin it around shifting gears while the truck is running--not even using the shfter itself.

Please tell me there's a simple adjustment I'm overlooking...I don't understand why it's so loose. My manual column didn't have any play at all in it. Thanks everyone!

Confused and needing to get on the road Monday!...

Tim

Steering Column Broken?

there are bearings top and bottom. I have seen the botton bearing area totally break, which causes fits with the function of the column. It allows the inside shaft to come up towrds the inside of the car.

Could that cause the wheel to be a little hard to turn off center and not self-center? That's what's going on with my truck.
Thanks!
