1995 E150 Conversion Van intermittant no start....

Intermittantly it will just click and as the battery was 5 years old and testing just below 12v with KOEO I installed a new battery. Started fine for about two weeks then just clicks. I removed the cowling inside the van and tapped on the starter housing and it's been starting normally for a week now. Do I have a dead spot in the starter motor? Sometimes when I keep clicking it then it will catch and start sometimes not for a long period of time. Thanks!

I would change the small spade connector that plugs on to the starter solenoid down under there. It is close to the exhaust manifold and starts losing continuity. Just pull it off and cut back about one inch of wire and crimp on a new spade connector, this is a common problem and I know Ford has a fix for it by changing it over to a ring connector but I am not sure how they do it. Changing out the spade connector will work for another eight years or so.

Here is a diagram.

spade connector.....

I wiggled/wobbled/tugged/plugged the spade connector good before I tapped the starter housing but it still clicked when I cycled the ignition key. A couple of light taps on the starter and it has been starting normally for a week now. That's why I originally thought I may have a dead spot in the starter. An old trick I've used for the last 40 years to get old tired starters to turn. As far as I can gather about the history of the van this starter is original so it's 11 years old and 189K miles. Thanks.
