Shift Lever fix or replacement

I have a 1996 Bronco with the E4OD tranny that has the O/D button on the end of the transmission shift lever. The end of the shift lever broke totally off and now there are three wires (light brown, green and purple) hanging off that are supposed to go the the O/D switch.

I was thinking I might try to glue the end back on, but with as badly as it is cracked and broken, I'm not sure that will work. And, if I do, I need to know which wire goes to which connector. I see numbers 1, 2 and 3 on the back side of the O/D switch piece, but don't know which color wire goes where.

The second thought was to get another one from a junk yard. What years and models of Fords can I pull a shift lever from that will fit my '96 Bronco? How does the shift lever attach at it's base? If I pull one from the junkyard, does it just have a plug for the wires into something in the column?

The end of my lever USED to look like the one here before the whole end cracked and busted off:

Another option is to find a dash switch in a junkyard from an older truck (our 1990 has the OD dash switch) and just re-run the wires. That way you don't have to mess with the column at all.

Question I have the same problem

I realize this is a bit late, but I may be able to help, did you get the problem solved? I have the same problem and have been looking for an explanation or detail on how to change the lever out since that is the way the part comes from the part store, I have the wires still connected if that helps you.

There is a pin in there that holds it in place. Here are the instructions I have and they worked great:
1. Remove steering column release lever by unscrewing from the steering column.

2. Turn ignition switch lock cylinder (11582) to RUN position. Using a 1/8-inch drift, depress ignition switch lock cylinder retaining pin through access hole and remove ignition switch lock cylinder.

3. Remove retaining screws of the instrument cluster mask and remove instrument cluster mask.

4. Remove four retaining screws from lower steering column shroud. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds.

5. Using a small screwdriver, pry steering column opening weather seal (3513) from pedestal on ignition switch lock cylinder. Slide instrument cluster mask toward handle of shift control selector lever and housing to expose shift lever pin.

6. On vehicles equipped with an E4OD transmission, disconnect transmission control switch (TCS).

7. Using a small drift, tap shift lever pin from bottom for removal. Discard shift lever pin. Remove gearshift lever (7210).

Thank you, this will really help and does not sound to difficult.
I will give it a go this weekend. I will have to see if my clinton manual has a diagram. I was supprised that I could not find the part at any of the online part stores.
