My starter is dropping out and going into a long high pitch spin once the first fire/contact hits. It doesn't do it all the time, but it makes starting a pain...
Here's the break-down:
1) Pull Choke
2) Gas a few times
3) Turn Key
4) Gas gets to the chamber for the first Fire!
5) Starter(?) Spins with a high pitch sound
6) Starter stops
Repeat 1-6 a few times (sometimes if fires on the first try, mostly it takes a few tries)
7) Truck starts
I have to do this again if the truck dies (Haven't started my tune-up/clean-up/rebuild yet)
"Bendix" is the name of the auto parts company, but the name in this context refers to the overrunning clutch in the starter gear, which allows the starter gear to disengage from the flywheel teeth, once the engine gets going. If it didn't release, the engine would burn the starter up. This little device was what paved the way for electric starters on vehicles. I have heard (but cannot confirm) that one of Bendix' earliest patents was for this over-running clutch in the starter gear.
The "Bendix" on a starter is the spring loaded clutch behind the starter gear. You can see it behind the gear, once you pull the starter out. Although it is inexpensive to change, it usually is better to change out the entire starter. Not only can it be hard to get the starter back together, but the failure of the Bendix often indicates the failure of the starter is not too far behind.
Hey Ratto99 I had a simular problem with my starter, not to long ago. What would happen is when I came to a sudden stop, it sounded like the starter was hitting the flywheel, starting it up wasn't to much of a problem I might of caught it in it's early stage, I posted a thread here about what it could be and the response was a new starter was in order. While my truck was sitting I went to a wrecking yard looking for odds and ends and I came across a starter complete just hanging from the cable, now normally I would'nt grab a starter from a wrecking yard, but this was to good to be true. Well to my amazement the starter was a good one, after placing it in my truck, No more problems the guys here know their stuff, I trust their opinions because most have "been there done that" That's why my eyes get crossed reading all the threads here trying to suck up all I can, these guys are great!
Replace the starter would be my advice also before you tear up the fly wheel. If you have headers make sure to have a good set of gaskets ready to go because if you have an FE with headers you will have to unbolt the right side header to change starter.
Been there done that about two month ago.
