Coolant leak from intake?

I reacently sprung a coolant leak that I thought was coming from the top of the water pump. I figured the pump gasket died and needed replacing. So I said to myself, well since I'm going to pull the pump off, I might as well replace it since its got about 160k on it. So I did and it turns out it wasnt leaking anyway. So I am leaking coolant from the crossover passage in the intake man. Anyone have any easy ideas about fixing it?

Thanks,
p51man

Check that flared heater hose going into the water pump most definitely. I spent much on anti-freeze only to find out it was that hose. I'm still leaking also. Don't know where it goes.

P.S. Make sure everythings tight.

Boy, it's like we Aero owners are metaphysically linked or something.

Shortly after I fixed the leaks in my heater hoses, I noticed more dripping of coolant on my driveway. I traced it to the top of the joint between what appears to be the front cover and the block, near the front corner of the intake manifold on the passenger side. I guess the system is weakening; I fix one leak, and the next weakest spot gives away. I haven't taken it apart yet, so I can't say for sure where it's leaking from, but it's deinitely BEHIND the water pump. Can this also be a leak from a freeze plug?

Add this to my list of leaks to plug. Can I dump a can of those radiator stop-leaks to fix this?

Lance1601:

Well the hose in question is either the intake or outtake hose going to the heater core its very simple to know which one if you squeeze the hose with the coolant flowing the coolant flowing away from the pump is the in hose to the core. In your case its probably not the hose unless its visibily cracked its probably the flare fitting on the pump itself a similar fitting on my Aero leaked right at the hose joint and I assumed that same thing you did so I removed the hose and lo and behold the fitting had a pinhole in it. A simple matter of loosening the fitting with a wrench and replacing it.

XLT4WD90:

I wouldn't use stop leak on any coolant system there are plenty of forum discussions about the bad effects of this stuff including the plugging of coolant passages which causes more trouble then the product as designed to solve.

It's another chapter in my debacle. The flared heater hose is brand new, and I redid the thermostat after the water pump, and there is green ooze around the thermostat area. I've heard head gaskets (which also I heard is unlikely), timing chain cover, intake manifold gasket, and leaky freeze plugs. It's crazy. I'm thinking of getting UV dye and a black light.

If it's a 3.0L, you might get a coolant leak from the timing cover gasket after you replace the water pump. The 4.0L water pump is different and does not have that problem.

It is a 4.0. I have already checked all the hoses for leaks and they are all ok. I know its definatly coming from the intake man. water crossover. I noticed when I had the alt. and idler pulley bracket off that it was coming out inbetween the intake and cyl. head. I put some stop leak stuff in there yesterday before I drove 25 miles to work. When I got there it wasn't leaking anymore. I know this is a temporary fix and it is going to leak again eventualy. Is there no way to get the intake off without droping the engine out. Is there a better way. I just want to chage the gasket.

Thanks,
P51man

You can remove the intake with the engine inplace. Best of all, you can remove it without removing the heads.

Question Coolant leak on 1995 F150 5.0

I have a coolant leaking from a pinhole leak in the connection that sits on top of the thermostat housing. I have a 5.0 1995 F150. I am trying to figure out or ask this forum what is the name of the "block" that connects the throttle body coolant supply, heater core supply, and a switch of some sort stacked on top of each other. looks simple enough to replace but need to know what that part is called? Thanks for the help.

Welcome to our FTE forum I am not familiar with the 5.0L engine, but hopefully someone here would be able to answer your question. It might help if you can post a picture of the thing.

Regards

You might want to replace your radiator cap in case it is defective and not venting properly to the coolant tank.

What we "use" to do is replace a 15 pound cap with a 11-12 cap on older vehicles.

Rebocardo,

I think the radiator cap is working; it was allowing coolant to go into the overflow tank when the engine got hot, and sucking it back into the radiator when it cooled, at least for a short time after I fixed the leaky heater hoses. Then I started to see wet spots under the van, which I traced to my leak. That's when I noticed the overflow tank was no longer getting filled; it was all ending up on my driveway. Until I have time to deal with this, I just add more water in about once a week.
