Weird hesitation problem

I'm working on my 92 F-150. It's the 5.8/E4OD and a 4x4. Last summer, I was doing some towing on a really hot day (hottest day of the year - 102F). The load wasn't bad - 3500 lbs trailer and all. The truck started bucking and hesitating really bad. It acted like it was losing fuel. I could change to the other tank and it would go away for a bit. After a little while, the truck would die and wouldn't start back up. If I left it for an hour or so it would start up and go a little farther. It never happened again after that day. The only code was for the torque converter slipping (which was really odd).

The day that it happened, I changed the fuel filter with no help. I'm thinking bad fuel pumps overheating the fuel. What do you guys think? I'm doing a rebuild on the engine (blown head gasket) and tranny right now, and I'd like to figure that problem out at the same time. So far during the rebuild, I haven't found anything that would cause it. I'm changing all the sensors, fuel regulator, etc. so I may catch it there. I'd appreciate any ideas you guys may have. Thanks.

Danny

are you doing any motor upgrades? compcam has a computer friendly one 35-255-5 help towing an give ya a little umph. Might also think about headers and a nice new exhaust.

Hadn't thought about the TPI. Any idea how I can verify it's the problem? I bet the stupid thing is expensive...

Yeah, it's getting the cam you mentioned and headers. Any idea how much torque/hp that cam adds? I'll probably add a new throttle body and an electric fan in a few months. I may do a new exhaust then too. It's got a decent one now, but I'd like a true dual with x-pipe. I haven't found a bolt-in that I like and I'm being lazy right now and don't want to build it. I make break down in the next week and spring for it, but I don't know.....

Thanks,

Danny
