Steering Column Shrouds
My 85 Explorer is sitting at work dead. I'm going to Iraq soon and getting it running again would be a small relief. The last time I tried starting it, I heard a pop in the steering column. I have replaced the ignition switch and the lock cylinder. I have adjusted the switch to the right location and still I can't start the truck. I get dash lights and the radio at the ACC and RUN positions positions. When I turn the key to START, the actuating rod goes side ways and will not go forward to move the switch and start the truck. How do I remove the shrouds where the transmission lever and lock cylinder sit in? How do I adjust the actuating rod to get this thing to start? Is there a cam or an eccentric that was snapped/sheared off?

Cant answer your question but I do have a solution. Turn the ingnition switch to "Run". May sure the tranny is in park and the e brake is on. Pop the hood. Put a wire on posative on the battery and jump it to the little red wire that is on the sarter solinoid. The engine should turn over. Hold it there untill the truck starts. Close the hood and drive your truck home. Good luck and thanks for serving our coutry! Be safe over there, and kick some butt!
P.S You could also use a screwdriver and just jump the two big wires on the solinoid but the first way I described is a little safer but they both work just as well.
