Starting Problems
My new truck has a starting problem. When i let it sit and its cold overnight the truck wont start ont eh first try. 2 to 3 cycles of the GPs and it will start. How does the GP system of this engine? Is there a controller like my idi? i saw the relay next to my fuel filter. The wait to start light only stays on for maybe 4 seconds at best even when the engine is dead cold i hear the relay come on then go off no other clicking goes on with it unlike my idi which will stay on as an afterglow. what is the prob can anyone give my any ideas?

The wait to start light is an idiot light, it has a set amount of time that it will stay on (something like 7-10seconds) maximum. After that the wait to start light will go off, but your glow plugs will stay on for two minutes. On cold mornings I would turn the key on my 97 model and leave it on for 30 seconds or so, no need to cycle it, and it would start just fine.

I don't know how long they will last. I replaced mine after 80,000 or so just for good measure. You can check the resistance of each glow plug through the connector on the valve covers if you like. The relay can be checked with a 12V test light. One post has power all the time, one should come on for 2 minutes after you turn the key. The relays are known to go bad, I would go to the local parts store and pick a new one up. They are only about $15 if I remember right.
