Hello,
New guy here finally with alittle budget to upgrade my 6.0L 2004 PSD within the next few days.
I am sold on getting a MBRP Turbo back/cat delete single exhaust. DONE
The other items I need advice are:
Air intake - From what I hear, its better to keep the extra dollars and just upgrade the filter instead --- with AFE pro gaurd 7 drop in ? Or Air raid, etc?
and a programmer.... SCT tuner I heard is pretty top notch right now. ???advice?
I use to tow a decent amount with my truck,,,but I don't tow as much anymore...alot of highway miles...looking to improve mileage too.
Help out the new guy I am going crosseyed from all of the searching and posts... I need to try and sum this up in one thread. Thanks!!!
I am going to hold off on new tires since I have plenty of tread left..plus I just dropped alot of change on new offroad tires on my 4runner.
I figured upgrading the air intake someway would be more beneficial to an upgraded and larger exhaust. I am approaching 30k miles now, so I figured rather than spending the money on another stock air filter replacement to splurge and get an aftermarket filter ....
The stock Donaldson air filter is exceptional in terms of flow and filtration. Personally, I'd highly recommend sticking with it... if you go to one of the aftermarkets, you might get more flow (your engine, even modded, can't use everything the Donaldson flows - why do you need any more?) but you'll end up ingesting a lot more crap due to the poorer filtration of the aftermarket stuff.
tvsjr is right!! Definitely stick with the stock intake. To add on what he said, the aftermarket filters only have any increase in performance at a high rpm that you are not going to see very often. When you do see that rpm it will only be for a moment so you won't even notice it.
I would stick with the stock air filter. I looked at full package from Banks, and I couldn’t help but notice that they utilize the stock filter and air box. I’d say that is a good ideation that the stock intake is pretty free breathing.
Hey RoofGoof, Good question. I am thinking of the same setup, and I was really sold on the AirRaid, but everyone says it's not needed! I wonder if making the little hole in the grill where the intake tube seems to go would help at all??!!
I can't wait to get my MBRP, like you are getting. I'm keeping the cat though, to help keep the balance of my 75,000 mile extended warranty. I hear the dealers can really raise an eyebrow when you remove the cat..
I have the SCT 1704-A for my 2004, and it is AWESOME! I don't even use performance mode, as I'm scared to hurt the engine. I tried it on Economy, and the power seemed amost the same as Perf mode to me, and I got like 1.5 t0 2 mpg increase using this mode!!! Good luck!
I HAVE heard that an AirRaid will really wake up the turbo whistle, which is what I LOVE... so I might still get an AirRaid just for that! (good commission check)..
Yeah, I have seen what seems to be 1,000's of topics on air intakes, tuners, etc... I am going nuts!
I think I will go with a Donaldson air filter...any recommendations where to get one or two?
I am looking at the SCT tuner too... I hope to get a few mpg increase like you did. I am going to do the zoodad mod too.

You could find a Donaldson filter under your hood. That is what came stock with the truck. You can pick them up at the oilguard website or fleetfilter or if you have to, the dealer.
I see this turned into an intake post. So in the interest of sticking with with OEM intake, I just took the front of the airbox off and have the exposed filter. But what about the FRAM OE replacement filter. Nothing special just a direct replacement for the Donaldson. And about $60 at wal-mart?
RoofGoof: I can't believe that I have never head/ read about the ZooDad mod... I am definitely going to do this and just keep my stock airbox/ Donaldson filter now, instead of get the AirRaid filter. THANKS! You just saved me $230!
I think I'll get more whistle from the turbo by opening up the front end for the intake to breathe better.
Tdusseau: Here's my input (that I've gotten from much research on intakes):
If you take off the front of the filter housing, you are definitely allowing more air in-- more HOT air, from under the hood, where the hot engine is, and that fan is right there, blowing the hot air all around the intake that is open, INSIDE the engine compartment...
Might I recommend the advantages of the ZooDad mod, which would have you put the front/ snorkel assembly back on, and opening up the FRONT of the engine compartment (via the holes that you make with the zoodad mod), where you can suck in more air from the OUTSIDE. If you open that up, so the snorkel is completely exposed, (some great pics available when you search for "zoodad") you are bringing in a lot more air now, but it is COLD air- from OUTSIDE the engine compartment. Colder air is better!
I to have thought about the SCT to gain MPG. I tow every day (mowing trailer) and anything to save on cost is good. I drive a 2004 F250 6.0 auto and I have used the tow/haul alot. I think it is OK to run all the time if you like it. My only thoughts are MPG, is it better with tow/haul on or off. Anyone ran a test for in town milage?
