66 Ranger gave a reply to an earlier post to which he briefly described swaping in a nv4500 O.D. trans in to his truck. He said a more detailed acount could be found in the archive section under transmission and axle. I tried finding it but was overwhelmed by the amount of material! Being new to the site I figure I wasn't doing something right. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this? I also would appreciate anyones input or experience with this swap. I have a 73 F250 4/4 with a 300 six a NP435 and divorced NP205. The NV 4500 seems Like it would be the perfect soultion to long distance highway travel with my 4:10 gearing.
I can't help you an the search but I am still able to help on this thread. I see on your post that you are powered by a 300 six. I'm not sure that six will pull the pickup at highway speeds in overdrive, but that is your call. I'm not too fond of that engine in a 3/4 ton. The tranny swap would be the same for the 6 as a v-8 as far as installing though. Get an adapter from Advance Adapters. Your NV4500 needs to have the larger Dodge input shaft. I had to make my pilot bearing by turning out the center of the bushing to fit the shaft. The clutch disc was for an International truck, 11 in. with splines that fit the shaft. I used the pressure plate off the 428, 11 1/2 in., slight loss in surface but I can live with it. I had to build a new rear mount/crossmember and have a new driveshaft made. The hole in the floor had to be moved back and I bought a boot for a Dodge (its huge) to cover up the holes. It took me several evenings to do this but I really like it. My 72 cruises 80 mph with ease and I wouldn't do that without an overdrive.
Thanks Ranger! People who haven't had expereince with the 300 six are often surprised at the torque and pulling power these motors have even in stock form. I'm sure mines up to the task. I do have a few more questions though, which application of Int.truck disc did you use? Also what did it take to attach the transfer case shifter and linkage, mine currently pivots on the tail housing of the tranny if I remember right. Lastly do you know the year or years of 2wd Dodge pick ups that I would find the right transmission in? Hope you scan this thread one more time . I'ts great to be able to network with some one who's actually done this swap!
