I do lots of freeway commuting in my 1986 extracab F-250 (460c.i)...Would changing the rear gear help the gas mileage? Right now it seems like the motor is screaming at 70mph...I believe it has 4:11 in it now...I only pull a small 6 X 12 on occasion....
The ones from a Ranger with a 4 banger and a 5 speed.
Seriously, lower gears will give you slightly better mileage. But you won't notice much of a difference between 4.10's and 3.55's. Maybe 1mpg? Probably not even enough to justify the expense of a gear swap. Plus, if it's 4x4, you need to change front and back.
If you wanted to go with 3:55's I have the set I pulled from my 85 F-250 4x4 that might work. Dirt cheap if you are interested. You could also try running a taller/narrower tire to bring down your freeway rpm's. I went from 3:55's to 4:10's and noticed an improvement in city mileage, but the rpms are at 3000 at 70mph.
One thing I did hear about a long time ago was using an old 3 sp standard tranny mounted backwards to use like an overdrive transmission. Not sure if this would work or not. Has anyone else ever heard of this type of Hillbilly overdrive.
