2004 Explorer Transmission Problem

My transmission isn't working correctly. Most (not all) of the time, it 'clunks' when I shift into gear. Especially if I am driving forward, stop, and then shift into reverse. And sometimes while driving there is quite a delay when it shifts gear. Enough so that I am pushed forward because of the lag.
I was hoping it was just the transmission fluid, but I can't even replace that myself. So I'm guessing I'll have to take it to a shop to get repaired. But hopefully I can learn some more about the problem before I go in so I can speak intelligently.

Have you had the tranny fluid additive installed? Check with a Ford service manager about this.

Might also be the shift silnoid. Had mine replaced under warrenty and it fix the clunk.

I had the additive put inmine but it still hesitates to shift. Now it doesn't always go into drive unless you carefully engage the shifter handle to make sure it's all the way in drive.
