Unless its a show truck, just pressure wash it so you can check for damage/cracks and let er rust!

Pressure washed, once as much of grease and grime is removed as possible, used a product called 'marine clean' and washed frame. Simular to engine cleaner but according to label, bio friendly, and does not leave residue if intend to paint frame. Delute 5 to 1 with water. Used large grinder w/ wire wheel, then followed with a rust inhibitor, then painted frame. May want to check the 'paint and body' forum see if find any info on preferred frame paint. Have used different products, at least for me, found 'por's 15' worked well. Believe comes in gloss or semi black, but if you go to there web site they have more info on products. Also sell the 'marine clean' if interested. Again, may want to run search in appropriate forum for other suggestions.

rattlecan stuff will hold up about 2 years, then degrade due to ozone and UV light. POR-15 works best, but is brush on. in between these two is Hammerite . its rattlecan paint, but chemicly diffrent, and holds up twice as long as regular spray paint, half as long as POR-15. I use it on just about everything.

Have used spray gun to apply Por15. If yu decide to go with Por15, strongly suggest purchasing pint of their 'solvent'. Paint is there to stay if not cleaned up within realitively short period of time. The solvent is only thing I have found that will clean equipment, and any body part happens to come in contact with. Also used as a thinner.
