electric choke installation

Hi all, I just ordered an Edelbrock Performer carb with electric choke, and I'm wondering where I should attach the wire for 12V for the choke (where have you guys done it?)

Do you have an ampmeter or an idiot light?

Cool, you can get power from under the hood and not go into the cab for it. BTW, these aftermarket electric chokes need a full +12 volts to operate properly. Getting it off the stator on the alternator is not going to cut it. It only puts out around half the charging voltage.

Since you have an amp gauge, the charging circuit is a little different in that the stator terminal on the voltage regulator is not connected to the stator on the alternator but instead gets a full +12 volts from the ignition key. This is where you are going to tap off power for the choke.

Look at the wiring diagrams in my gallery, the one that says 1969-1970 F100-350 power, charging and gauges. Find the voltage regulator, it’s just below the battery. The wire that you are interested in is the one marked 904. On the regulator, it’s the second from the bottom and is green w/ a red stripe. You want to tap into that wire with another wire that will run up to your choke. You can follow the 904 wire in the harness and tap into it at any point that is convenient. That’s all there is to it.

If you don’t want to do it that way, let me know. You can tap off power from inside the cab and run it through the firewall but that’s another story.

I was about to ask the exact same question, but found this link by searching "electric choke power". Thanks Barry!

The stator terminal on the alternator was where Ford hooked it to.

That won't work right, the Ford electric "assist" chokes are designed to run off the stator's voltage which is around 1/2 of the charging voltage. He's trying to wire up a 'electric only' choke which are designed to run off of a full 12 volts.

Looks like my '72 has the green w/red stripe wire, second from the bottom, on the regulator. That's where I'll go for full voltage. Thanks again Barry! I hope to start the beast today sometime.

You're welcome Matt!

That wire is also an excellent place to tap off 12 volt power for an aftermarket ignition module, it's hot only in the 'start' and 'run' positions.

I'm just about to install my Pertronix system.
I'll just use the same wire.
Thanks again, Barry!

Barry, master of all Ford electrical connections, do I need to run my factory Ford electric choke for my '85 302 to the stator connection on the alternator or is there somewhere else I can connect it to?
