Hey Guys, new to the forum and really like it so far. I have a 74 F100 with a 78 351W and love it, haven't had any problems with it....until about a week ago. The power steering pump quit working. I found another one in a parts yard and am going to rebuild it. However I can't seem to get the pulley off of either pump, is there a trick or method behind it? I tried heating it up and using a puller after trying to unscrew the 3/8" hex key. Any ideas? Thanks, Grant
There is a special puller for the power steering pump pulley. I hate to recommend Autozone but they should have one it their loaner tools. It usually takes a lot of pressure to get it started but once it breaks loose it'll come on off. You might want to consider a rebuilt one from the parts store...usually they are not very expensive...you'll still have to move the pulley over as the rebuilt pumps do not have the pulley on them.
The pulley is interference fit/pressed onto the shaft for the P/S pump.
Usually a replacement pump will come with a bolt, nut, and a washer that can be used to install the pulley. You'd just need to remove it. Or get a power steering pump pulley remover/installer tool.
and when you install the pulley on the new pump, make sure it is facing the right way. The pulling hub must face away from the pump. Or else the pulley will not line up to the belt and then there is no way to pull the pulley off.
