Another timing question 390

OK,
I look on the Balance for the timing marks, and show 10 degrees ATC, then 0 TC, and the way over is 30 degrees BTC. When timing, I should be around 10 degrees on the BTC side right? Its a stock 64' 390. If so it is set between 6 and 8 degrees now. But when the motor is op temp, I get a knocking sound (ping)when under load. Should I increase the timing? Sometimes it will run-on when I shut it off.
Thanks
Chris

RETARD the timing if it's pinging. On a Ford, that's turning the dizzy counter-clockwise.

My FE's have had 10-0-10-20-30 marked plainly on the damper.

I'd check if the damper ring has slipped - common enough when the rubber is 40 years old. Turn the motor to TDC on #1 and see where the timing mark is.
