lonnie, it depends on the type of refrigerant in the system, and if it is low, or empty.
if it is r134 and just low, you can put a can or two in and have no problems.
if it is empty, or r12, than thats another animal that is harder for a diy'er to do.

The size and shape of the fittings on the high and low side will tell you if it is R-12 or 134a. If you have R12, a person with a lisence to handle R12 will be required. If you are low, you have a leak....question is how bad. If it isn't bad, you can recharge. If it is empty you might want to fix the leak, replace the dryer, and have it evacuated. In any case, measure the pressures on the high and low side.
