Elec problem - Fuse 17
My 96 F350 4x4 crew is burning Fuse 17.. It starts fine, but when I put in drive, I hear a short and smoke comes from the steering wheel/ign key area. My oil pressure and alt gauges then drop to the left..
Anyone, know what to check first? Is there a common area in the wheel/key area that might short and blow 17?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Brian
check for short in any of these areas, especially door switch.
send me an email and i will send a pdf of 96 owners manual to you.
I need to get the key assembly out of the column to get the plastic cover off.. Any ideas on this would be appreciated as I've looked at it and cannot figure it out..
Thx,
Brian
It was the wire that comes out of the gear selector arm to support the overdrive switch and "off" light at the end of the arm.. The wire - which is three small wires was rubbing on the mount for the arm and shorted.. I got the wires spliced and now it works fine..
Seems like bad design to have wires rubbing and shorting in the steering column.. Just wondering if this is a common occurance..
Thx,
Brian
