Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
Timing changes and all other adjustments do not make large changes in performance alone, they each make a small improvement.
The only exception to this rule is the addition of a turbo.
But what you can do is a lot of small improvements through exhaust, intake, timing and fuel delivery that do add up to a much better running and performing engine.
Most of the mods are low cost, the exhaust being the most expensive. It probably returns the biggest improvement as well since it affects the rest of the mods.
Ford used an exhaust and intake path that were much to small for the engine to easily get the required amount of air into and out of the engine. Even on the stock turbo units the exhaust was way to small.
Your reply is greatly appreciated and for good reason. Heres my scenario. Along with my 88 SD I tow a fifth wheel Roll Off frame. This equipment is used for pick up and drop off of 40 yard storage containers but mostly used for moving Trash Compactors and Containers. My average gross is weight on average 29-30,000 pounds and is used in terrain with many steep grades. I have slowly gone the route you speak of excluding the installation of a turbo. I was hoping for a little more with the injector timing. I will be going the route of turbocharging, there probably should have never been any question. You live and you learn!
Thanks again, I will check the turbocharging section for some more input.

I am running an ATS aftermarket turbo with a 3" outlet and downpipe into 3" dual stacks. It does a nice job for me.
Where are you located?
I am in WV in the mountains.

Six speed tranny
ZF 6
But the 88 uses a speedometer drive off the tranny.
The ZF 6 does not have a provision for a speedo drive, by the time it was used in 99 the speedo was driven off the rear axle electronically. The switch to the electronic speedo was in the 92 model year.
I am in the same boat as you wanting a ZF 6, but like you I also have to do several other upgrades to the rear axle and speedo before I can do the swap. I tow heavy in the low 20's here in the mountains, but I have 3.55's. Handling the torque of the turbo is hard on the rest of the driveline with those high gears. But I have a 4 speed so I can not afford to gear lower in the axles. Fuel went over 3.00 a gallon here this weekend.
Monday morning deisel was 3.12. Afternoon 3.21.
Tuesday 3.40 !!!! I havent seen them again yet but I'm gonna bet its at least 3.50 before the end of the day. This is insane, what used to cost me 70 bucks to fill my truck now costs over 140 dollars. How many miles did you pick up after your turbo was installed and also did you have to change the pistons or the head gaskets?
With the way the oil companies are raising the price of fuel it would almost lead me to believe that free energy was just beyond the horizon. I know motorcoach sales out here have dropped about 30% in the last 2 weeks because of the increase of deisel and gas and I'm sure auto sales will decrease before long.
Can you spell recession ?

Who has time to go 40 when you can go 70.
The biggest thing killing my mileage is the T 19 4 speed, no overdrive.
70 MPH is 2550 RPM, but traffic usually runs 10 over the limit here, so I am running 80 at 2850 during the morning rush hour.
The next thing that is hard on my mileage is the longest stretch of flat road within 100 miles of where I live is 1/4 mile long. All the rest is either up hill or down hill. We have a lot of that kind of terrain.
