I agree with the AVG info. If I was going to pay for a program it would be NOD32 by Eset. http://www.eset.com/ Not a resource hog and has a great reputation not to mention track record.
From my perspective as a reseller, Norton is a tad more effective than mcafee ever since mcafee went to the web-based interface.
My customers had issues remembering their usernames and passwords when they had to login for updates.
I will say that Norton Internet Security and Norton Systemworks are utterly useless. They create more problems than they prevent. If you're on dial-up, just get a good antivirus. If you're on dsl or cable, use a router to disconnect your computer from the outside world. Software firewalls just aren't really effective in my opinion.
One of the most common issues i've seen is running an antivirus like norton or mcafee with 128 or 256MB of RAM, do yourself a favor and upgrade to atleast 512MB.. everything just works better
I do reccommend AVG to my customers that run older computers running win2k or prior, as Norton no longer supports anything older than XP. AVG also tends to be less of a resource hog, I've seen it run well on a win98 machine with 64MB of RAM..
Avg Pro is my primary.
Norton corporate anti-virus is secondary
Hitman pro for backup scans. Its a compulation of anti-virus, malware and greyware programs. Finds all the missed junk by AVG and Norton,
I found Bitdefender works better then Norton or Macfee To many little holes in them.
Norton has "bloated" their once good anti-virus program and while unistalling some no longer used programs last week, I still found traces of Symantec left behind.
On another note, I disabled a lot of "services" that are running or started by Windows and my computer has sped up.
