questions about headers

I Have A 2000 Cc Sb 2wd 3.73. I Have Done K/n Fipk Kit,tuner, 65 Mm Throttle Body And A Gibson Straight Through Muffler. I Am Happy With The Results So Far But Was Considering Headers To Cap It Off. My Question Is Are The Banks Headers W/ Y Pipe Worth 1200$ For The Advertised 20 Hp Gain Or Would Just A Custom Fab Y Pipe Do Close To The Same Thing. Banks Says The Y Pipe Will Help But The Truck Will Sound Like A Hopped Up Honda . They Said Ford Did The Exhaust That Way To Increase Back Presure Aqnd Cancel Out Some Of The Inherent V10 Tone. I'm Sure Part Of This Was Just Them Pushing Their Product But It Also Makes A Little Sense.---one More Thing, What Is Ya'lls Take On 3.73 Vs 4.10 For Daily Driving And Occasional Towing Moderate Loads, What Kind Of Power Or Economy Increase Or Decrease Could Be Expected? Thanks For Ya"lls Help.

Whether the headers are worth the $1200 would be a personal call. There are some on here that have done the headers and are quite pleased. I have just a y-pipe mod and it doesn't sound like a Honda. I would agree with Banks on the part about the back-pressure in the stock pipes to stop the flutter noise.

What Gains Did You See With The Y/pipe? Did It Change The Sound Quality Much, Keeping In Mind I Have The Gibson Muffler? Did You Have To Use Stainless?

I doubt that you will see 20 hp from a set of headers. Some of the guys here have reported a loss of torque when they changed the exhaust to decrease the back pressure. Besides, I've heard that the greatest restriction is the converter, and you can't get rid of that.

I have the cheap ebay headers and they didn't seem to make much difference until you get above 3 thousand rpm's. If I drove around like that I would get about 8mpg.

If you have $1200 to spend look into a supercharger.

I'm one of the ones who loved the headers. I went with Borla on my 99. It really did make more power. It was in the upper RPMs which is fine by me. When I'm towing up a hill I'm not putt puttin I got the pedal to the metal and turning 3500rpms + . Solo my mpg didn't increase much but towing I got 1-2 mpg better. I say go for it. Banks or Borla both have a new y pipe and the header tubes are longer. You can get the Borla #17185 for about $770. Borla
