My 01 PSD has around 71,000 miles on it. i bought it just a little while ago from a dealer so im not really sure what type of oil the previous owner ran. as i said it has 71k on it and has no leakes. i was wondering if it would be a good idea to start using the synthetic rotella. is it worth it? or is it even a good idea for a engine with that many miles?

I have about 67k on mine and am going to synthetic Rotella. When properly maintained the 7.3 is just getting broken in with that milage, so don't worry about that. Some go longer between changes with a syn, I probably won't push it too much until I have some oil analysis done to determine proper/safe intervals. I will also be getting a bypass filter. If you don't mind spending the extra money, go synthetic. Some will says it's not necessary, and it's not but it does offer some advantages.
Totally agree with Hink...it's fact that synthetic is approx. 15% better in thermal conductivity and has a wider viscosity index. Keeping it clean with bypass filtration is the way to go because diesel carbon buildup changes viscosity(carbon starts to agglomerate). Clean oil is happy oil and u may see better mileage and definitely longer lasting engines. The external oil filtration units also act as additional oil coolers.

i went to Rotella 5w-40 synthetic and i am one happy SOB every time i start my truck up and dont have to listen to the romp romp romp. its only $14 a gallon at wal mart.
Depends on where you are at strokin. THe synthetic thing is like the whole cps thing. different results for different people. I tried lucas in my oil once and it have my truck the romps. wanted to go with synthetic rotella, but walmart in my are doesnt carry it. I'd like to try it, but the more I think about it, my truck really seems to like the regular 15-40. that, and its hot here 99% of the time.
