Switching to automatic.

What I really need to know is what all is needed to take a '69 swb f100 with a 360 and column shifted 3speed over to an automatic. It currently has manual steering which will need to be changed to power as well. I have a c-6 on hand I'd like to use, I just got back from a great salvage yard where I got everything needed to put a/c on. I realize that this won't be a walk in the park, but maybe it wont be too bad. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Greg

Switching to automatic.

different fly wheel is definitly one item.I'm going from auto to standard, I mean I m taking a engine from an automatic car and
slapping it in a standard pickup.so I am oblivious to everthing else...If the c-6 comes from an fe it makes the job alot simpler
becuase its a bolt on, bolt off job if ya know what I mean.

Greg: This is what systems you will need, to convert from a manual 3 speed.
1. Auto trans from any FE engine, w/ flexplate and spacers, torque converter, rubber mount, carb linkage and and shift linkage. Plus a vacuum hookup for the modulator.
2. Driveshaft and slip yoke.
3. Radiator with cooling tank, or an automatic trans cooler, and cooling lines.
4. Automatic trans steering column. Because I have yet to find an auto trans steering column WITHOUT power steering, you'll need to do that swap as well. If you can find one, great. I means you can do the projects separately. (My lack of observation doesn't mean there aren't any, by the way.)
The column switch will involve electical work, so be prepared for hours of testing if you get wires crossed!
Power steering conversion:
1. FE PS brackets. Since you want to put in AC, make sure the ones you get are from an engine which has AC, because the PS brackets are slightly different. Now, you can get the brackets from a car or a truck FE, and you will see a wide variety of different setups, even though they are all FE engines. As long as you get everything from one engine, you'll be fine, just don't mix and match. I got mine from a 76 F-100.
2. Pump, hoses (only get the pressure hose new), and PS sector. Put a new rag joint on while you're at it. Make sure you keep the pitman arm for the PS truck sector; it is different from the manual steering.
3 You may end up changing the drag link and tie rods; others here can be more specific on that.

Good luck on your project, I hope to do mine this winter!

I don't have the flexplate for the c-6 but had planned to buy a new one, but I've been thinking. If the 360 is externally balanced through the flywheel/flexplate, and the balancer, will the new one I buy have to be balance matched to the flywheel that is in there now?

Switching to automatic.

I believe the 428 & 410 are the only engines in the family that balance is an issue. All others take the same flex plate.

Thank Goodness I just got the engine out a few hours ago, only had to fight it a little But it finally gave up and came on out.
I'll sleep better knowing that. Thanks
