Diesel Buying Tips

Hi all-
I've pretty much made up my mind to trade in my 2003 5.4L F250 (35K mi.) on a 2002 7.3 F250 (45Kmi), assuming that it is all it is billed to be once I get to check it out.

Big question for you folks- I don't know one thing about diesels. Are there any things that I need to be wary of when I am checking out/driving this truck that an uneducated person would miss?

Particular sounds, smells, or general behaviors of a good or bad diesel that I should keep in mind to make a good decision?

Your help is appreciated-

I don't know about the smells (at least on engines), but the first thing you might want to check is how badly it smokes, when reved high on cold engine.
The second thing to check is by-flow. Open the oil fill cap and see how badly it blows at the idle and high idle.
Get a GPS and a stop watch. Check the acceleration to REAL 60 MPH.

One thing to keep in the glove box is an extra cam position sensor, they go out without notice. Get a new one, then keep the old one as a spare.
