carb help plz
I need help plz. My 429 is frustrating me. Here is the deal before I had a holley 750 carb on it ,it would start everytime and purr ,idle real smooth but it was to big for my 72-429 so I switched to a holley 600,now this carb has been gone thru rebuilt, no leaks, no nothing, but it wont start or run. If you spray starting fluid it will start only for a few seconds then die unless you continue to spray more in ,whats the deal can someone help me.
check the little jets inside the carb that meter the fuel from the bowl to the venturies. This may be the problem. If they are still clogged, or not set right, then no fuel gets to the engine.
thanx
I did that before, when I rebuilt the carb I went thru everything soaked it, cleaned every hole, in the carb body and jets everything, it has new seals, gaskets, all that, Im thinking it may be the power valve. Is that possible? would that keep it from running, the 750 ran on it, idled perfect even though it was to big, but the 600 wont run or idle.
Sounds more like a choke adjustment problem. A power valve blown would make things richer and help cold starts, not hurt. What are the floats set at. No gas or very low level in the float chamber will prevent starting and running. When you accuate the throttle does fuel squirt out tha accelerator pump nozzles? If not, you have no fuel in the carb.
thanx
thanks I havent tried that to press the accelarator and see if fuel squirts out the nozzles. I sit the floats level the same way I did on the 750 according to the specs.I think part of it is a choke problem to becasue the choke is closed when I try to start it and im not sure how open it should be as the weather has been fairly warm here 70-90's
The choke closed makes the carb pull the fuel into the engine even better than when the choke is open. How old is your gas? As to your float level, do the fuel bowls have sight plugs on the float bowls. If so you adjust the float level so that fuel just dribbles out the holes, otherwise, the is no spec if you have external float adjustments and sight plugs.
yes
Yes it has sight plugs the way I sit the floats was the way I was told was to flip the float bowl upside down then turn the needle valves in until the float sits perfectly level it worked on the 750 without problems but i will remove the sight plugs and check, and also do the accelerator pump test, I also have new gas in my tank.

well i tested the accelerator pump and there is no fuel squirting out so I guess Im still not getting any fuel but Im unsure as to why.Ill try and readjust the floats .what else should i look for or do?
Take one of the bottom bowl screws out and see if you have any gas in the bowls at all. What model 600 cfm Holley do you have? By model, I mean the "list number" on the front of the choke area. Did your carb have a filter in the inlet area? If it is one of the sintered bronze ones it may be completely clogged or installed backwards. If you cannot get a squirt from the accelerator shooters, you probably don't have fuel in the bowls. If the bowls are dry, take the gas line off and crank the engine VERY BRIEFLY and see if any gas comes out. The reson I say briefly, is Ford's distributor location. All it takes is one little spark and you have a real problem. Good luck with it.
thanks
thanks yea it did have one of those bronze filters but its installed correctly I have a manual that shows how the carb goes together ,I think I need to readjust my floats I have new needle valves so I dont know why they would stick first Im gonna check the gas level in them.If It comes down to it, Ill jsut have to pull the carb and do another rebuild I guess.Oh its a 1850-600cfm The motor has a new fuelpump also and new gas in the tank, so Im pretty sure its all in the carb.
