Can anyone tell me exactly where the timing marks on the camshafts should be for a 5.4 V-8 SOHC? As far as I can tell when I took it apart to replace the right cylinder head both marks on the cam gears were pointing straight down. Is this right? There are no other marks on the chain to tell me if I have everything right. I should have marked them when I took it apart but I didn't. Thanks for the help.
i assume you mean DOHC? when the crankshaft mark is down at the 6 o'clock position, the right side (driver) cam shaft mark should be at the 1 o'clock position, and the left side (pass) cam shaft mark should be at the 11 o'clock position.
Let's clarify this before confusion results....
DOHC in V-8 means two cams per head. SOHC is one cam per head.
You explained the SOHC, which is what the question was for anyhow. Thanks for the input.
There should also be marks or a piece of the chain that has a different color to it. If not, I searched and found one of our regulars, Geoaigel, has his own method he used -
"When I hung the chain on the wall for storage, I noticed that the two marks I made are exactly dividing the length of the chain in two equal sections! So, there you have it. If your chain has no markings, just put your own two markings, so they are evenly spaced over the lenght of the chain. Then install the chain with the markings matching the sprocket notches.

Thanks for the help. I have a SOHC setup (1 cam per head). I did manage to get 'er all back together this weekend and she runs great. At least for now that is.
