I have an '00 F-150 4x4 with the ABS operating when I step on the brake, with the truck almost brought to a stop. I have no lights and no codes. Has anyone else experienced this? and if so, what were your findings? Thanks.
I've run across breaks in the sensor wiring that were intermittent that would cause unwanted ABS activation. Basically, the ECU interprets the momentarily open circuit sensor as a locked up wheel and kicks in the ABS.
I agree. I've not had this happen to my Ford truck, but exactly the same on other vehicles. Disconnect, clean, and grease (dielectric) all the connections and check the wiring for abrasion.
This is the most common reason for ABS failure. Dealers will usually replace harnesses (at significant cost), but they can often be cleaned up.
An additional common reason for touchy ABS activation is a mechanical fault in the ring gears at each wheel that the sensors use for monitoring the rotation of each wheel.
Sometimes they get rust under the ring which expands and causes the ring to crack, sometimes they just crack due to other unrelated causes. Teeth can break off, too.
