i just bought a 1977 f150 yesterday and i noticed on the way home i did never have any oil pressure and the coolant temp didnt work what are some thing i can do to fix or check to see whats the problem
First step should be to look under the hood and see if the senders are hooked up.The sending unit wires might not be hooked up.Second check to see if the dash end is hooked up to the instrunent panel. Then take it from there.
Since both gauges are not working it is most likely that they are not getting power from the small voltage regulator on the back of the dash. Bad connection, printed circuit or bad regualtor.
You have 2 options.
1) Remove the wires to the sending units one at a time and ground the wire connector to the engine intake.
Turn the key to on ......... Does the gauge peg to the right ?
If No, the problem is with either the gauge or the circuitry.
If it does, the problem is the Sending unit.
2) Remove the connection from the sending units one at a time and test each wire
for a pulsing 5 volts with a test light or an sweep Multi-meter.
If no power, the problem is either the ICVR or a broken wire.
The instrument cluster printed circuit is probably coroded. Here's what I did and it works well... Clean (rub rub rub a dub and then rub some more)all of the contacts to the printed circuit with a pencil eraser, then wipe with a WD40 soaked rag. That fixed most of my probs other than some bad grounds here and there.
I learned a long time ago in the computer repair business that a pencil is your friend. you get a good high grit abraisive and graphite lube in one convenient package.
