4X4 Conversion
I have a 1990 4.0L V6 Ranger, and I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade it from 2-wheel drive to 4-wheel drive. I have this obsession with off-road vehicles, and would like to add the 4X4. If I found a Junkyard tranfer case and shifter would it be easy to do? Also I would have to get a new driveshaft. Would it be as simple as that?

you are best off getting the entire truck as you will need all of it. you will need the new trans with t case , drive shafts , braces , wiring and vacuum harness, front suspension , front axle and some more things. it is doable but not wise.

So this should be my street truck ,and this should be my street truck. These rangers look sweet all decked out, with cowl induction and such. So the Bronco will have to remain the only 4X4. Thats ok though, because my bronco is a sweet off-road vehicle.

Yeah, it would take alot to do it. If you've got plenty of time and alot of $$$ then go for it. I always though it would be cool though to have the 4.0 behind 2wd and see what it does for power. You can also just throw in a locker and it would probably get you pretty far too.

This 4.0 is an amazing engine in terms of power, and in such a small truck it's almost too powerful(If you can have that). I once pulled a chevy 1-ton with a waterlogged boat out of the water with my ranger. We're talking a 1-ton chevy with a water filled boat on a tailer. It had just been salvaged and they couldn't get enough traction ot get it out. I hooked my ranger to it and pulled them right out.
