I cant figure out what just happened to my 5 speed trans/shifter!! The shifter was nice and tight....now you cant hardly find a gear. You can find 2nd pretty easy, getting to 3rd is pretty adventuresome, 4th is a nightmare...and you pretty much forget trying to find 5th going down the road. The linkage(does it even have linkage or does it go straight into the top?...dont know) is so loose, you look like you are stirring a kettle of 'chittlins trying to find gears.
Start by pulling the shifter boot up. Look around, maybe the stopper bolt for the shifter lever itself is just loose. Remove the large nut, put it on the other side of the stopper bolt and crank it on. This will pull the stopper bolt out, thus removing the shift lever. After you get the lever off, you'll see a little shifter nub held to the trans by 3 torx screws. Remove those screws. BE SURE THE TRANS IS IN NEUTRAL BEFORE YOU REMOVE THOSE 3 SCREWS!!!! After you get the screws out, lift up gently on the nub and it should pull free. There's a bushing or two in there and a couple of pins which notoriously fail in this trans.
Hope the instructions help enough. Its been a long time since I've done this. Hopefully someone who's been thru this recently can verify the disassembly process is correct. Most importantly...BE SURE THE TRANS IS IN NEUTRAL BEFORE YOU REMOVE THOSE 3 TORX SCREWS!!!!

Thanks a lot bud. These bushings that you speak of...are they replaceable by me or will I have to have a trans mechanic do it?
You can do it. Ain't bad at all. I'm pretty sure you'll have to go to the Ford dealership for the parts though.
Let's talk more about the movement of the shifter for a minute. Maybe we can diagnose this problem a little better. Does the shifter move while in gear? Describe the movement. Does it feel like a full wobble/jiggle or is it more like a rotating pivot? The wobble would most likely be the bushing, the pivot is almost definately the stopper bolt for the shift lever.

its like a side-to-side, go-anywhere when you are changing gears. It doesnt move much while engaged.
