Has anyone had the dealer install/add cruise to their truck? My 2000 F550 7.3L DSL didn't come with it. Dealer says they can buy the kit and install for about $400! They must replace the steering wheel because the swithces are on it. Any opinions/experience?
I did mine back in 2000 on my 2000. Came with instructions, was fairly easy, but you need to be careful with the watch spring thingee and how you fold all the extra wires under the cover. Pinch a wire and the turn signals go bonkers or the horn goes off. Hardest thing was putting the new steering wheel on straight. nothing an alignment won't fix however.
Well Ford finally called back and said the factory cruise add on is not avalible anymore. The gal said she searched the whole country and can't find one!! It is hard to believe there is not one in the country. SHe also said she could install a aftermarket unit with the switches mounted to the column($485), I don't want them to butcher this up. Any ideas?

Get one out of a junkyard that hasn't had the airbag deployed. You might even get lucky and find a color match.
And that year there were only 2 color steering wheels: tan or black unless you wanted just black....
Down side to the junk yard is that you don't get the clip for the watch spring to hold it still while you fiddle about. There is also some magic number of winds that you have to maintain in the spring, but I forget how many.
Also no you can't use the existing watch spring, becuase it doesn't have one wire that goes to the cruise controller.
Do a search for my name and cruise control for the correct number kit and see if stealerships can scrounge the kit sitting on someone's shelf. they USED TO BE 200.00 more or less.
Good luck
