my wife decided to buy me a truck. she did a 3-way call with the guy selling it and he told me that it had a 390 in it. well i told her to buy it. after she had bought it and had it insured i dechypered the vin number. according to the vin number it has a 360. is there any easy way i could explain to my wife how to figure out excactly what kind of enging it is? here's the link to my photo gallery, https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...&albumid=21551, there's two engine pics in there, they're not too good cuz she took them and e-mailed them to me, but that's all that i've seen of the truck so far.

The 360 and 390 are both 4.05" bore motors (same block) but the 390 has a 3.78" stroke compared to a 360 with a 3.50". Pull number 1 or 5 spark plug (either front one is easiest to get to) and using a dowel or a screw driver and turn the motor over (BY HAND! DO NOT CRANK IT WITH THE STARTER MOTOR) and measure the difference between all the way down and up. That's about the only way to tell if the engine tag on the dist. hold down bolt is missing.
After 37 years of being kept on the road, anything is possible with these trucks.
Tell her that she did great finding this truck! Take her to dinner, tell her how much you like this one! You don't need any hard feelings or friction when it's time to throw money at it. LOL
thanks for the help guys, and she does have a sister, she's away at college though. so if y'all are in south carolina, try to find her, cuz if you can, you're good, cuz no one else in the familiy has any luck finding her. oh, and i have told her how much i like the truck, and she'll be getting a special surprise for buying it for me when i get back from this deployment. and when i get home i'll figure out if it's a 360 or 390, again, thanks for the help
well if you stomp it and you feel like you're in a f700 dump truck then you've got the gas sucking, no power 360!! like i had!! If you stomp it, burp a tire and feel like a man at the end of the road then you've gotta 390. Thats easier than pulling 2 spark plugs!
instead of cranking it, get the #1 to TDC stick the dowl in there mark it, pull the #4 plug, stick it in there and mark it. when 1 is at tdc 4 is at bdc. oh and the thing you are confused about in the pictures is the heater core, why it is there i don't know but i have a feeling it shouldent be.
Top Dead Center (piston at the top of the stroke) and Bottom Dead Center (piston at the bottom of the stroke) TDC is marked as 0° (zero) degrees on your damper for setting your timing. For #1 cylinder TDC is the first time at 0° and onr revolution later you will be at BDC (or vice-a-versa).
