OK, so every cop down here in Rochester Hills, MI has watched too many law and order shows. Not to mention this particular one looked like Ryan Seacrest with panties too tight. Anyway, I'm on my way to work this morning when the main vacuum line on the truck goes bad and the engine dies. Of course this happens when I'm stopped at a main intersection. I go to fix it (duct tape the hell out of it) and notice that my fuel return line has split. No big deal, I've got an extra length of line in the cab. While I fix this, Barney Fife comes up and asks what the problem is and that he's called a tow truck. Okay. As soon as I say 'fuel line' he freaks out like it's Chernobyl and has to take a look. I show him the fix; he sees the duct tape, one of the missing belts (useless smog pump), and the missing computer. Now it's the end of the world. He takes down my info, sees that my insurance is near expiration, and proceeds to give me hell. All this is going on in the middle of the intersection. Finally, I get him calmed down enough to get off the road and into a parking lot. I had to explain why my insurance was nearly out of date and why I was in Rochester(duh, what's a co-op?). He's still ranting and raving about unsafe vehicles and how I should spend some money on a new vehicle. Finally, an older officer who actually knows what a carburetor is comes by and gets him off my back. EDITEDing ridiculous. I get into work an hour and a half late with fuel all over my hands and some explaining to do. Anyway, that's my rant for the day.
EDIT- Rant repeated in a font big enuf to see:

He is just doing his job. I'm sure maturity played a role on his part, reacting the way he did. There is no point in getting upset. Just be glad he didn't write you up a ticket or something. Just like in any field, you have your good eggs and bad. You just happened to find the "rotten " one. Whenever I am involved with someone like that I play nice. Tends to calm them down faster.

Sounds like he was doing his job poorly. There's too many people in positions like that thinking they should know and do more then they should. I'd be pissed too if I lost an hour and a half of my day because someone had no idea what they were and should have been doing.

I agree, the font is too small.
I agree... it sounds like the power-trippin policeman was being a jerk and deserves an **** mastication by someone with big gnashers.
Ditto on the font being too small, but here's another take on the cop's attitude.
Some people have the ability to repair their vehicle to safe operating conditions with duct tape by the side of the road (depending on the problem, of course), while others couldn't change a headlight bulb to save their life.
This cop had no idea what your skill level was, and probably was concerned that IF you didn't know how to safely fix your vehicle, you could be putting yourself and others at great risk by driving it further.
I wasn't there, so I can't say whether he over-reacted, or that this what he was thinking; just throwing an alternative take on the situation out there...
what's a font?..........kidding.......sounds like you're driving a vehicle with too many missing or defective parts.....I'm sure your local Ford dealership will cut you a deal on a new truck with no money down, an extended warranty, a nice roadside assistance service a free tank of gas with a new purchase..........all on a 7-year note and 18.99% interest!!! Rochester, NY?.....sounds like you live down here in NC (where Barney Fife, and I think Ryan Seacrest, is from).......
p.s. Never heard of anyone catching heat for insurance "almost" being expired....It's either expired or it's not (or as DMV likes to call it....an "insurance stop").....
Missing computer? Duct tape? Man it sounds like you have the ultimate beater. Barney Fife was just ticked cause he was having trouble with his own beater and wasnt creative to fix it himself. I also dont understand the insurance being almost expired, like the previous poster either it is or it isnt.
Sounds like one side of the story to me. Your story makes me wonder, what else is missing - besides attitude? Just the impression I get. I could be wrong.
Good eggs, bad eggs....good cop, bad cop....put a uniform on them and give them a car, and they are all the same...POWER TRIP IS RIGHT.....! MY TWO CENTS AND I FEEL BETTER......!
I was brought up to think that cops are supposed to help. When I was in the Military as an MP and if I would come up to someone in your situation I would just help them push it out of the road way. There was no need for a lecture on how your insurance is ABOUT to run out. Maybe he's having a bad day too. Maybe his wife wised up and left him that morning.
