shopping engines

Through a series of misadventures I ended up cracking a piston in my 1988 Superduty 7.3 IDI. It's the long chassis dually with the highest GVW and a 5 speed so I've decided the cheapest thing to do is just put it back together. Looking at rebuilds and opinions of them it seems the consensus is don't do it. Given that this engine got pretty hot and the injector pump was long in the tooth I'm loathe to rebuild it plus time is a factor. This is a work truck and not having it on the road is costing me big time. Does anyone have any experience with the International remanufactured engines, that or the Ford Motorcrafts? They are at least a thousand dollars more than anything else I've seen but if they last like a new motor it seems like a good investment. If there's another source of engines I've missed I'd love a pointer in the correct direction. Reviva is not an option, too many horror stories out there. This is a non turbo motor and what I'm looking for is a drop in, new everything.

Oh and it gets worse, the tow company didn't drop the drive shaft so I'm also looking for a new transmission, I'd love a 6 speed but they're very hard to find. At least that's not on my nickel.

You said the R word.

Be very careful, there are about 20 company names that those are marketed under.
Also there are a lot of resellers out there that are selling them also, you have to ask specifically.

Due to my position, I just deleted what I wanted to say, be warned though.

I have a salvage yard engine in mine now.
If I were going to get a reman engine, it would be a 6.9 without sleeves, bored just enough to get the cylinders straight and true.

Not the R word that's for sure. FleetPride is the R word. So far the only safe options I've found are the Motorcraft and the International oem's. I have started looking for low miles salavage motors. What's hard about that is if I find one it won't be local so there's a lot of trust involved. I'm looking forward to hot idle oil pressure greater than 10 psi.

I bought an 89 that I recently realized had the R word in it, I'm not sure what brand it is but it seems a strong engine, I don't know anything abou it though.

Why will you need a transmission??
If it is a 5 speed and they did not drop the driveshaft when they towed it, then they surely put it in neutral. Even if they didn't put it in neutral and pulled it in gear, Why would you need a transmission??

Don't I wish, the gears spin in neutral same as they do in gear. Tip it up 5th isn't in the oil anymore. They get really hot. I haven't seen them yet but they're definitely welded together. The tow company owner knew all about it. He didn't even argue he just started looking for a replacement ZF 5.

The R word is Reviva.

Both Ford and International use different rebuilders depending on their location.
I talked with an International dealer here in WV and one in Pa that are about 250 miles apart. They had different remanufacturers that built their engines.

Reviva also builds engines for some Ford dealers. Our local dealer gets his diesels from Springfield Power Products, but they get gasoline motors from a Reviva division that does gas motors.

I have found that there are really only a couple of big remanufacturers for the diesel engine. They just get shuffled around to different distributors.

There are a bunch of smaller companies that do rebuilds, but they take longer and cost more. I also think they may last longer as well.

I talked to Diesel Auto Services in Vancouver and liked what he had to say.
I also talked to DPS performance, he only rebuilds the 6.9 for the very reason I was having sleeve/cracked block issues.
If it was not Thanksgiving and I was worried about snow, I would be running a DPS 6.9 in my truck right now.

For what I was going to get, 6.9 engine, ceramic coated and milled pistons, head studs, copper head gaskets, O rings in the heads, 7.3 valve trane, stage 1 injectors and a custom IP, with no core I was looking at 7000+ dollars plus shipping.

How far was it towed? About 40 miles is when the gears welded together. I like DAS's web page a lot. You are not the only person I know who likes the 6.9 better. A heavy equipment operator I know swears the 7.3's are prone to cavitation issues with the result being hydro lock. I'm not liking my local International dealer anyhow and they were a major palyer in the chain of events that lead to the failure of the motor. Thanks for the several places to look. I'm kind of dead ended for anything local, AZ. I'm really looking forward to no dual mass clutch.

Cavitation is only an issue if you do not run SCA (Supplimental Coolant Addative) in the coolant and do scheduled maintence.

I have no problem with a 7.3 until it is rebuilt.
In basic terms a 7.3 is a 6.9 that has been bored 110 thousanths and running bigger head bolts. Most parts are interchangable.

Heavy equipment is my current occupation, retired over the road driver and many other hats in my closet as well.
