ok i have a stupid question but this has got me stumped. yesterday i was pulling my trailor around a pretty far way on the highway so the diff. got pretty hot i guess?( the truck was fine) but when i got home i started backing it up the drive way i heard this very loud sliping / grinding noise from the rear end. the sound is hard to discribe but it sounded a lot like steel stressing. (if that makes scense) my dad bought the truck about ten years ago and i have owned it about seven years and from what i know the gear lube has never been changed. im going to start with that but does anybody have any suggetions???????? P.S i think it only happens when its hot.
please help!!!!!!! im at a loss.
the truck is a 1980 f-100 300 ci c-4 and i dont know what rear end it has.
What type differential do you have? Does the diff have bolts on the rear or is it a 9" with bolts only on the front? You also should have an ID tag on one of the upper, passenger side studs. If it is a 9" the clearance past the ring gear makes it difficult to get a tube and pump into the bottom to drain entirely so a little effort to remove the chunk is in order to get it done right. (It's not that hard, really, and you can inspect the chunk at the same time) But a more important question would be How do you know the sound is coming from the differential? A universal joint is very capable of making a sound like you described. Do you hear the sound while backing on a flat surface and then again when you are backing and put it in neutral? Inspect and grease the universal joints (cheapest first step) and post back more details.
