runs rough 'under load'

'88 F150, 300/6, 5 speed manual

This thing always starts and runs smooth up through 3rd, but then I don't spend much time in 3rd. When I hit the freeway I feel some missing. In 5th gear it's worse. It smoothes out as I crusie, but if I try to accelerate or come to a slight incline (if I need more power) it starts missing again.

Any thoughts?

It could be a couple things. I would pull the codes (free & easy) and that might point you in the right direction. If that doesn't pan out, the very next thing I'd do is check the fuel pressure. If the pressure is too low, the motor isn't getting enough fuel. The problem gets worse the harder you get on it. You can buy a fuel pressure gauge for about $30 at most parts stores.
