[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Sep-02 AT 10:55 PM (EST)]My truck is knocking really bad at about 40mph +. So i suppose its the main bearings... its sorda more like a rattle. But anyway, can i replace the mainbearings through the oil pan? how much are main bearings. and how many do i need to put in. Is it a pretty easy job? THe hardest part would be taking the oil pan off, right... thanks in advanced for the imput
Also... i read in a previous post about putting die in the engine oil, then putting a black light under the engine to find a leak. This sounds like a great idea... where would i get the die to do this?
The right way to do this would be to pull the engine. But if you can get the pan off it can be done in the frame. Bearings are not very expensive, I like clivite 77 bearings, you can get them through summit and other mail order catalogs. But before you order you need to know if the crank has been ground. The old bearings will have a part # and either a "STD" ".010", ".020". STD is standard and means the crank has not been ground yet. The best way to do this is one at a time. You remove the lower cap and push the bearing out around the crank, it will only come out one way, there is a tang on the bearing that keeps it from spinning in the bore. If you are still thinking about this then I will tell you all the info on the job, it isn't going to be as easy as if the engine was out.
O yea, before doing this what is your oil press like? when mian bearings go so does oil pressure.
As far as where to get engine die, Napa should sell it.
