05 Expy towing question

Ok,
Just looking for some opinions. I have an 05 Expy,5.4 with the factory tow package. I might be in a situation where I need to tow my wife's explorer sport and about 300lbs of gear from TX to MN. We are relocating and since the company is paying for gas, I see no reason to drive both vehicles. I was thinking of putting the Explorer on a 2 wheel dolly & pulling it like that. I'm not even sure the Explorer can be pulled like this without dropping the driveshaft.

Do you think the Expy would do alright? I expect the total weight to be around 5k with load, trailer & vehicle which is within the limits of the truck.

Just curious. BTW, I have pulled many many trailers, but not with an IRS.

Thanks

TKD -

U-Haul's dollies are rated at 3900# for towing rear-wheel drive vehicles; your wife's Sport is probably over that. I'm 99% sure you'd also have to drop the 'shaft. The Expy would do fine with that weight, even with IRS (personal experience - Explorers with IRS tow better than ones with solid 3rd members).

a 2 wheel tow dolly is a bad idea. they have no brakes and they are not made for over 3900 lbs. you need to get a car trailer so all 4 are off the ground. u haul rents those also the price difference is 10.00 per day.

Sounds like good advice. Hadn't really looked into the trailer side of things. If I went with a full dolly, I bet I'd be overweight

The Expedition will pull it just fine & it would travel on a dolly. Yes you will have to drop the drive shaft.
The trailer is a better idea with brakes & not having to do anything to the explorer. I know I would enjoy a trip of that lenght more with the trailer.

I personally would get a trailer and tow it. THe brakes are more then worth the extra cost. I pull a lifted Jeep Wrangler on a 20 ft car hauler which weighs roughly 6,000-6,300 pounds together. It's a 98 with the 5.4 and it does awesome and I get 9.5 miles to the gallon which isn't really that much worst then normal which is about 11-12mpg. Usually closer to 11.
