Speedo Stop working/Tranny shift goofy

Good day

My 99 F-250 4x4 was shifting funny and then I notice the speedo not working..Worked one minute then not the next..First time problem ?
I've search and tried some of the ideas..
I've cleaned the rear VSS sensor (Just replace 18 months ago)
Checked the wiring to it..seems good

Checked the wiring to the tranny speed sensor..seems good too..

Should I replace the tranny sensor. And if I do what's involved in this ....Unbolt, pull out ,stick new one in, bolt in.. One unit.
Can I clean or check the tranny one ??

Or any other suggestions ....

Thanks Cory

You check the fuses in the fuse box for a blown fuse? I had a fuse tap in mine and I pulled it and forgot to replace the fuse and the speedo didn't work. The transmission was shifting hard as well. I put the fuse in and it fixed the problem. Not sure what fuse it was. Just a thought.

I just did it and found no blown fuses inside or in the engine bay..

Just a thought , I'm not 100% sure the sensor I checked on the tranny was the right sensor...
Can anyone tell me where to look and what it looks like ?

Thanks Cory

a bad VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is a common problem on ford trucks and SUVs and can cause the type of problems you are having. it is located on the top of the rear diff.

We have had that problem a couple times on E 350 work vans and it's been fuses both times. Check the fuses with a tester to be 100% sure.

I replaced the vss sensor on the rear diff about 18 months ago do you think it's gone bad ?
I checked the fuses by pulling them and they look good BUT will go and recheck with multi meter...
What about the speed sensor on the tranny ?
Thanks Cory

Did it trip the od off light on the shifter also? Im geussing on that speed sensor in the top of the rear diff. Common prob! You may want to have a shop check for any codes it has thrown.

If you changed it 18 months ago and didn't change the fluid in the rear diff I'd say the sensor is bad again or its covered in junk from the rear diff.Pull it and see!
Let us know what ya find.

Nope the od light never went off..ANd still not going off
Diff oil was change 6 months ago..
I checked the VSS rear diff sensor and clean it off not much on it at all other than oil.....
? how would dirty oil cause a sensor to go bad ?
Bad reading maybe ? But I've cleaned it off

Thanks Cory

i think more then likely the rear senser or the one on the rear of the trans went bad, only other thing could be the wheel on the diff carrier by the ring gear is loose or moved away for the correct spot.

If you PRAY overnight it will fix itself......
Tranny fairy came by last night and fixed it......What a nice Fairy
Next time I hope he leaves an invoice so I know what the problem was ?

The only thing I did last night was go under the truck and move the wires around the tranny to find the speed sensor on the top of the tranny ?
Well it's working again so I don't really know what to say other then.. Thank you to everyone that help out ..

I unplugged the rear diff senser to test to see if the problem was the same...And it was...NO speedo and the tranny shifted poorly.
So I have bad rear diff sensor or the wire somewhere is loose..
Hoping for a bad sensor !

Chk the connector to the rear sensor for corrosion or loose pins,There should be some waterproof grease inside also.
