what i have is an '83 Bronco. the control unit is for both heat and a/c. the temperature lever will switch between cool and hot air. the fan speed lever works and will increase/decrease the speed of the fan. now the problem, the control lever for everything else(vent, a/c, floor, defrost, etc.) half way works. when you move it from off the fan will kick on, but you can't move the air flow to the floor or the defrost it only comes out the vents. what i mean is if you have the lever set for the air flow to blow out the floor it still only blows out the vents and the same thing if you set the lever to blow air out the defrost.
now to my question, the control unit doesn't seem to use a cable to control where the air flows, it does to change between cool and hot, so how does it work? and, how do you get the control unit out of the dash?
If I remember correctly (it has been awhile) now in a 95 but the control set on my 86 was accessed by 2 retaining screws going up right above the radio the whole pannel front hinged down after that and radio and heater controls were accessable to remoer with thier seperate screws.
I am sure however that there is someone who has done this more recantly than I.
Good luck!
The control is a vacuum switch wich redirects vacuum to different control dashpots to open and close air vanes inside the ventilation system. Sounds like you have lost the vacuum feed to the control unit. I say this because the default airflow in the older Bronco's was out the upper vents and in later models was out the defrost vents. Repair involves a bit of odd "human pretzel" antics under the dashboard to deal with the vacuum lines.
