Question Engine code??

Hi everyone, I'm new to the diesel and I hope that someone can give me some answers. I have a Hypertech stage 3 programmer and a K&N FIPK air system installed in my 7.3L. I checked to see if I had any codes in the computer a couple of times and I have found the P1249 Wastagate Fail Steady State Test code (2 times now). It has never thrown a check engine light. I was wondering what the Waste Gate is/ does and is this something that I should be worried about? Thanks ahead of time...

the wastegate is a kind of a blowoff valve for the turbo. Basically when the engine shifts, the turbo is still spinning fast, but the engine is spinning slow. To keep the boost from blowing the engine, the wastegate blows the excess pressure out the exhaust and the turbo builds pressure with the engine. Gas turbos have this as well in the form of a blowoff valve.

I'm not familiar with that code though, sorry.
