I was wondering if any of you have put one of these http://www.jottodesk.us/ford_f700_f350_jotto_desk.htm in your truck and if so how do you like it. I have looked high and low and these look to be the best on the market.
The Jotto laptop mounts aren't bad. The only thing I don't like is the "universal" fit and attachment strap. Personally, I use a Havis Shields Consolidator telescoping computer base assembly attached to the side of a 30" equipment console. My Toughbook docking station mounts to the top, and the Toughbook snaps into that, giving a custom fit. This works much better.
What's your intended application? I'm afraid you'll find that garden-variety laptops will NOT hold up in vehicle use. The screen hinges will fail, the hard drives will fail (the Toughbook HD is packed in gel), and the display doesn't produce enough output to be readable.
If you don't need massive processing power, there are plenty of good deals on used Toughbooks (the new prices may scare you). I paid $1K about a year ago for a new-in-box CF-28 fully-ruggedized unit with 13.3" transflective screen, CD, P3/800, and touch-screen.
Ive got a home made bracket/shelf for my XPS Dell, it looks noting like that but its just a shelf....... monitoring the the trucks sensors at highway speeds and around town is COOL!!
I, as well as hundreds of other people in the San Jaun Basin area of the Four Corners (NW New Mexico) who work in the natural gas field use Jotto Desks in our trucks. Although there are other brands available, Jotto is by far the most popular. I travel on harsh dirt roads and have had no prolbem with durability. I do not travel with the screen open though.
