I pulled the spare tire cover off for the first time today and eithier ford put a locking lug nut on from the factory or someone else did. I'll prolly never find the right tool to match the lug nut to take it off.
does anyone have an idea on how to get it off?
Take it by your local tire shop. They have a smoth walled tapered socket that can be wedged onto this lug and there for removed should not be to tight.
There is a set of sockets that is made just for this problem......they have sharp edges that are curved to dig into the lock when torque is applied in a CCW direction. The lock will be junk when your done, but the wheel will come off.
Now I dont think you need to buy the set, but I am sure you can borrow one, or like the other reply said take it to a tire shop and have them do it. I would think a regular repair shop will have the socket you need also.
I used a die grinder to grind two flat sides to an old locking lug when I was faced with the exact same problem. Once I had two flat surfaces parallel on the lug, I was able to use an adjustable wrench to remove the old locking lug. (I did it this way because I already HAD the die grinder and the adjustable wrench and didn't feel like buying a tool to get the spare off the truck).
I just took a 12 point socket that kinda fit over it and beat it on the lug nut and then turned it off with the ratchet. I can't get the socket off the lug nut but its off the spare.
